INTERVIEW WITH TYLER KEYLON OF INSURGENT.
Start off by introducing yourself & your band members - including what each of you guys do.
Well I’m Tyler, and I yell angry things in the band. We have Tyler M who is also in Hackin’ Jessie on Guitars, and Ed B who is also in A Sense of Urgency on Drums. A bassist is currently in the works, but nothing so far.
and here’s your first question:
Can I meet horsecock?
.. I’m kidding about that one.
Horsecock, is all the way up in Stafford I’m sorry to say, but man is it an honor to meet him. You can’t walk for a couple days after.
You guys are an upcoming band from Virginia, explain what the music scene is like over there compared to California’s. Is Richmond any different from Stafford?
Honestly, I haven’t been to a good show in Norcal in a very long time, but what I do remember is that there is a lot more diversity in the Northern California music scene, and a lot of acceptance. The punks could hang out with the hardcore kids who could hang out with the metal heads; it doesn’t happen like that here. So you hear a lot of bands sounding the same, everyone wants to either sound like Emmure or Cruel Hand. I love both bands dearly and respect them but people keep ripping them off. It’s all over the world of course, so I can’t really complain.
Richmond and Stafford, well, Northern Virginia or Nova, are COMPLETELY different in my eyes. Richmond has a lot more diversity in music and a lot of shows (I hate that word) feature different genre’s sometimes so everyone can get a different taste for different types of music. And also, a lot of the more “underground” bands come through Richmond often, a lot more powerviolence, grind, punk, hardcore, metal, indie, and all sorts of other genres. Nova has some performances roll through sometimes, but mainly a person is either going to go to Richmond, D.C. (best scene ever), or Baltimore. But, major emphasis that Richmond has grind and powerviolence, HORY SHET is all I have to say about that. Melt your fucking face.
So would you say the music scene in Nova is more influenced by their local bands or the signed ones? How has it affected your bands sound?
I would say that a few years ago it was extremely influenced by locals. There was pretty much a show every other week and local fests all the time in places like the Sterling Community Center in Sterling, VA, Jaxx in Springfield, VA, and KC’s in Fredericksburg, VA where I was living. Everyone remembers those days; when I see people around here and we bring up music somehow the old Nova scene is brought up because it was so funny. Bands like Amicus, When True Thugs Fall in Love, In Alcatraz 1962, Debelia Debelia, and Force Fed Broken Glass were some that always were loved. It was just hilarious. Now it’s a bunch of kids trying to be Urban Outfitters models into dubstep.
I remember when you introduced me to Force Fed Broken Glass, they aren’t making any new music either are they? Hipsters took over the world though. Same with dupstep. It seems as though that’s the only thing that’s happening on both sides of the US. I guess we can’t even escape that, like all those scene bitches back in the day. “I hate boys that look like girls,” I REMEMBER YOU SAID THAT!
Force Fed is yes, unfortunately done but still remembered. That is why I still have Short Bus Pileup to still listen to :] And YES I’M SAYING. You know, I love drag queens, they are my favorite, but damn did I hate that whole trend.
Speaking of melting your fucking face off, I recall that you would get into your audience’s face when you play a show. That’s true, right? Tearing people apart by their anuses.
YES, getting in their faces is the best. Being in a band is a nice release as we all probably know, and most kids want to get into it as well because everyone has a reason for going to these things. And if you are one of the kids that hates being touched at them get the fuck out. It’s fun.
YES, one day I will come see you perform and you better make me shit my pants. Please. I want to defecate all over the venue.
I will throw you all over the venue
It’s like when you would paint & listen to punk. Would you ever sell any of your paintings by the way? Or possibly throw them in a gallery of some sort?
Yes yes yes I love painting and listening to music, punk of course particularly just because of the rapid tempo and aggression involved. I would love to sell my works someday, I have in the past, but that was just me getting lucky. To have my works in a gallery would be amazing, perfect actually. We want to make Insurgent artistically influenced as well, a collective of fine arts and mixed media you know? With culture currently being stripped from education and art programs becoming extinct, we feel the need to bring the two together. Appeal to all senses of the body rather than just one.
Would you pussy slam bitches to your music?
Pussy slam… Shit if you want to, do it. Some kids have their different versions of baby making music, if you want to create a little stinker to Insurgent, be our guest. Have sex or don’t have sex, get drunk and high or don’t get drunk or high, do what YOU want. That’s your right kids :]
But in all seriousness it would be cool if you had sex to Insurgent.
Hahaha, hardcore pussy slamming bitches to Insurgent. I bet you that’ll happen one day. On the topic of sex music, what are some bands that you’d fuck your gf to?
WELL DAMN. Quite a question, hmmmm…. 80s hardcore punk… Dead Kennedys for sure
Random question, favorite pick up line?
I’ll stand in an elevator and try and pry open the doors and slam into walls. Then ask if they are ready to die. If they laugh, we have a keeper! If not, awkward silence. Then poker face —> :|
I AM WEAK. That’s how you get a girl? Talk about making someone uncomfortable hahaha.
I mean, I am a ladies man… Get at me winky winky smiley face
If you could ever have Alfonso in your band, would you guys play shows in the deviled egg and big mac costumes? It’ll be funny to see a deviled egg coming at you, then smashing you in the face.
You don’t understand how much fun that would be to have that in my life. So. God. Damn. Perfect. And. Disgusting.
This is actually getting pretty lengthy, haha. So, we’re gonna have to wrap it up.Any last words, comments, random shit you’d like to throw in about you/Insurgent?
Well the Winter Demo is out now, it was only 2 people recording all the instruments so now we have a new drummer, don’t mind the drumming pretty much haha. And… Admire art. Stay individualistic. Fuck collectivism. AND THANK YOU
